Spare replacement parts for keepers in your collection

Post by Solanum88 » 08 Jun 2013 10:18

While mechanical watches are often touted as long lasting timepieces, the availability of parts seem to be an issue in the long run

Certain brands keep their parts for 20-30 years after a product is discontinued but it seems a trend for companies to limit availability of parts to only their own service centers and charging an arm and a leg for them. Others do not seem to have a proper inventory of parts for discontinued pieces.

Do you purchase/collect spare parts for keepers in your collection that you intend to hold for a long time? Say spare donor movement, bezel etc etc? or worry only when its time to service the watch?

I tend to buy duplicates for vintages, with the thought that I will still get one good watch out of 2 or 3 combined if anything needs repairing

Pending funds and preference, I think its prudent to be able to buy spare parts or even watches. However, that is personal and no right or wrong. Depends on what you are Collecting too. If vintages, I'd say yes. But also depends on availability of the spares. For a 7s25 movement, no because there are plenty and no need to worry plus its cheap. But dials, hands, cases etc, why not? Happy hunting.

Thanks for the wide range of views guys, I think I would just enjoy my watches and acquire parts if i come across them instead of purposely sourcing for them. :)

So they are of the same size? Was thinking of breaking the plastic swatch and have its movement transplant to a metal casing. Movement still very accurate but the watch is falling apart from the strap corners!!ImageImageImage

That is a Eta 2842, no date.
Crown has only 2 position.
