Boyz to Men 2: Worth watching? Up to you...
Personally i would give 1pt slightly better than the first.
The movie runs more than 110mins. Starts with a hard effort to make audience shed some tears to the key character who because of "keng" to awol, ended up causing his father involved in an accident, follows by stroke attack. For almost 20mins or so... the movie focus on family, which could be a little boring or maybe for some... emotional, as family ties is the main focus here.
Then, roughly towards the middle of the show, lots of laughter. Fellow brudders here who had went through BMT will most likely be familiar with "siao on", "wayang", "mark" and the "in camp, break outside" love relationship that may have happened to some before... Also to recall some of your memories with the various training which includes the mocked up attack under GPMG... which i forgotten what's the name is... grenade throwing, field camp, range firing, route march, section attack course, midnight weapon theft raid... basically those training with funny moments that you may have forgotten. This middle part runs some of longer... probably 1hr or so. Opened my sight on the development of the training on current generation recruits.
For example... the under GPMG attack mockup training... wah... nowadays the ground seems to be cleaner and not so siong than my time? My time was detail line up, leopard crawl to the trench on muddy grounds, take up shooting position, fire, then move from the trench, crawl again to the next shield object, such as behind car or rover, take up firing position, shoot back, then crawl off from the objects towards barb wire, flip, crawl under barb wire, clear obstacle, crawl to next barb wire obstacle, leopard crawl under barb wire face down, clear obstacle crawl all the way towards the next trench, completes course. My time siong until lots of other recruits including me signed the most 1206 because of equipment dropped in the process due to crawling and harsh conditions of the ground. Nowadays new recruit really...
Then the last 30mins or so of the movie... Ministry of Defence PROPAGANDA time! The company OC tries to convince the recruits why the need for NS lah, why our country precious lah... blah blah blah... by holding to the letters written by the recruits' parents to their kids(huh? nowadays parents got write letter meh??? SMS will do ba...), fake by tearing off dummy letters, dampen the moods of the recruits, then story telling time...in the end recruits got brain washed, all turned "on" to finish the BMT... Buck loads of PROPAGANDAS!!!!
This second part will not have reflections of training from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s liao. All focus on the current generation training, with not to miss, the type of "KNN" warrant officers who will appears in most recruits days...
Those brudders who're now M.R like me... will most likely be wowed by the less stress(compare to our times) training conditions and be confused why there are still recruits cannot take the current training environment... To those who're still in their reservist, will probably laugh at the funny moments in bunk, in training and when out of the camp...
Personally... i won't go and see the second time. But i won't suggest fellow brudders here to miss the first! Go watch it, or not, your choice.

Re: Movies Talk
personally I don't think ah boys to man is fantastic. however, I kinda enjoy it basically because I can related a lot to it (I was a rifleman)
the characters are fun to watch and I'm sure most of us would have seen one or two of them. I personally can relate to the platoon sergeant character and it was very well played.
like ed said, pretty much a lot of propaganda. (not that I hate ns, but because it was too obvious)
the humors are pretty predictable for me but do watch if you're a hokkien peng like me or in combat. for me if I would to choose again... I would wait for dvd release or torrent.
oh ya I'm surprise rifle raid and artillery drill are no longer allowed in bmt nowadays cause parents complain?!

Re: Movies Talk
This is why i'm sibeh surprised that in just 20yrs time after my BMT(i just passed 39, wah... remembering 20yrs ago in the no-government Tekong Camp serving 5mth BMT), so many thing changed!funky_banana wrote:oh ya I'm surprise rifle raid and artillery drill are no longer allowed in bmt nowadays cause parents complain?!
Last time in Tekong very mentally siong one... not physical... that's why during my time got few case of suicide, or shooting cum suicide on trainers during live firing exercise. To be frank lah... i do "keng", but not like the movie portrayed, reporting sick, which is quite stupid one that the M.O no need to see, knows one "keng" liaoz... I "keng" as totally english in-efficient, Teochew peng to be perfect. But still takes physical training lah...
