[Thoughts]- Automatic Movement storage... what's ur practice

Post by Ed.YEO » 07 Sep 2011 18:50

We just love watches... don't we?
That's why we never satisfy with just a single piece in our closet. Eventually, even if we get a 12pc watch box... we'll soon find ourselves getting another watch box or one with much bigger capacity.
For some of us, who like autos more than quartz might get a watch winder or 2 or more depending on our collection volume or how precious or how expensive our piece may be...that's usually dependent on our budget as well.

I personally have coming close to 25 autos, with most Swiss movements and minor Japanese.
The average power reserve of the Swiss movements are 40hrs, while we have about 2 days to interchange between 2 piece. And most Swiss autos may require us to wind up first to get the movement moving follows by shaking get the movement reach to its 40hrs power reserve level. While the Japanese just require us to shake it up to get the movements reaching to their 40hrs reserve...
However, we can stop the moving seconds of the Swiss, but not most Japanese.

How do you store your treasures?
Swiss movements-
1. Wind up-> shake-> Hack?
2. Shake-> Wind up-> Hack?
3. Wind up-> leave it till it stops?
4. Shake-> Wind up-> leave it till it stops?
5. Must get a watch winder for each piece, regardless of the watch value?

Japanese movements-
1. Shake it up-> leave it till it stops?
2. Shake it up-> do it every single day?
3. Must get a watch winder for each piece, regardless of the watch value?

for me, i will keep most of my wearer pieces in one box, those are my pick & go watches, consists of autos & quartz.

if my Swiss autos stopped, i will set time,day,date first then shake once, then handwind it about 25 turns of crown & will just strap on wrist, just charge the PR from wrist movt for the rest of the day.

Jap watches, same rule :)

I'm not so anal about super accurate timekeeping so hacking is just a bonus function for me :)

I m very curious leh, how many of us here use winder ar?

Haha i find it very kuku to wind it up on the winder. Sorry no offence winder user.

For me more or less the same as ceo. When i m rushing for time, i will just grab a digital or quartz watch or an manual winding watch with no date and go.

Once a month or so wind up those watches that have not been using.

Winders are meant for watches with a lot of complications IMO, when you need like 1 hour to set the perpetual calendar, moon phase and other complications lol.

1 school of thought I know is by putting watches in winders, it actually wear them down, decreasing the service intervals.

For me, all of them sits in my box. Every now and then, like sinner I wind them up to make sure the lubricants don't get settle down.

I have a lot of Russians, manual winders, so usually those winding exercise will give me a sore thumb.

Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't
own it, but you can use it. You can't keep
it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it
you can never get it back.

Anyway... Like some fellow brudders do... i mostly let the rest of my collection run till it stops. Then possibly shake a bit, follow by full wind up for the next cycle... mostly 2wks 1 time.

I don't use winder, and believe that the mechanical components in a watch has more or less a fixed duty-life-cycle and mean-time-before-failure. Running it on winders will consume it's lifespan (albeit marginally; not to be confused with servicing interval).
