[Review]: Magrette(MAR-GRET-TEE) Regattare

Post by lunarin79 » 06 Nov 2012 01:36

I'm back into microbrand(MB)

finally have the time to do a review on this great timepiece by a New Zealand company, Magrette.

For those who are into MBs, perhaps you would have known Magrette Bronze is the most affordable bronze watch out in the MB market(correct me if I'm wrong), although it's a brass case but it's still highly sought after, even today. I still have no luck in obtaining one.

Magrette models shares the same case style except for Regattare, which has dual crown; one for setting the inner rotating bezel, another for normal time setting & Q-Set date.

Watch measures 44mm in diameter, 15mm thick, 24mm lugwidth. Double domed sapphire with AR coating with no distortion even when viewed at an angle. Miyota 8215 workhorse movt but no stuttering hands.

A PAM homage, some said. Not in my point of view for there are several differences in terms of the case style, Regattare is more like a super compressor styling.

Full package came with 3 straps, 1 black soft leather with chilli red leather underside backing, 1 silicon rubber strap & a brown strap.

Regattare on Paros tan 24mm strap.

loved the lume-filled chrome outline sword hands, subtle yet compliments the whole watch. No lume on secondhand.

what's interesting is the different hour markers elements within.

- a numeric C3 '12' as main marker
- single baton C3 markers for 1,2,4,5,7,8,10,11
- double baton C3 markers for 3,6,9

Numerics on C-Ring is White & Burgundy, a new look as most divers are only in either C1 or C3

Surprisingly, with all these different types of elements running around within a dial & C-Ring, the designers in Magrette really did a great job in terms of asethetic & colour choices used. Instead of overly cluttered, it somehow flows well with each individual elements. Date window size is just about right for me, still legible.

Oh,did I mention how nice the matt C-Ring & dial is?

side profile of the case, showing the dual crowns, both signed & are screwdown crowns. Double domed sapphire crystal with AR.

Some minor feedbacks from our international friends are the size of the crown, too small for their stubby fingers but I guess it worked pretty well for Asian fingers, I have no issues unscrewing/screwing back after time setting ;)

The case has an interesting finishing. It has an alternate finishing of brushed & polished.

Image

side profile of case, showing the rounded sides, making this watch very comfortable when worn on wrist.
Image

sexy curves in flow with drilled lugs, a breeze for us.
Image

caseback view, simple but strong
Image

not to mention, it's pretty thick as well

Besides my Ocean 7 LM3 , I think this piece is serious contender to the LM3, although both watch's design/movt are entirely different.

Magrette is a brand that I will recommend for those who wish to try a MB.

Will I get another one in near future?

I might.

And I am seriously considering getting this PVD Rose Gold Moana Pacific Professional

Interesting company, this is the one you said from NZ hor...

Everything looks great but wonder how it will look if the case is all brushed.

if the entire case is brushed then it will probably lose its 'versatile' & will become more like a 'tool' watch

brushed/polished is better imo

y versatile?

strap on a dark coffee/black strap matches office wear

strap on a CF strap with red stitch fot the casual rugged side

lol

Wow, these are very nice. Can I check whether these designs are homages of other brands or its own?

Oops, TS already mentioned that it's not homage.

very nice timepiece.. :D

would anyone know if currently they are still producing any model where they put some piece of kauri wood in the back case like shown in 'a blog to watch' review?

here is the link: http://www.ablogtowatch.com/magrette-re ... ch-review/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cheers!

I have a pc of the Magrette bronze... it is the 1st batch which was of the wrong material so brass it is.... they offered to send back and replace the casing once they found out on then the worldwide material batch issues... think then many of the microbrands are getting their bronze from this single source suspected to be in china. Anyway I rejected their offer and kept the watch... it is a nice piece and probably true to be the cheapest bronze/brass watch around... will post photo later... this is the 1st of pc of watch that got me hooked to strap mixing... bad poison spell that causes me to buy straps after straps  then finally also go and got a Panerai... then this strap changing madness extends to all my seiko's... no stopping till now...
