Review: Junkers W33 Swiss Automatic Day/Date Titanium Case

My collection of Junkers has been quietly growing. Dangerously, quietly growing if I may add. Besides being a War History Junkie, having good luck in acquiring these German Made Time pieces in a good price plays a big part as well.

Today, I am reviewing my first ever Junkers. She’s paying tribute to a classic aircraft, the Junkers W33. For more information about this historical plane, I recommend a quick read on Wikipedia with this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_W_33" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What I like about this watch (Part 1):

Titanium Casing: This watch weighs so light, I don’t feel it on my wrist at times.
“Made in Germany”: The one vote of confidence for me. German Cars, German Football Team, German Electric Shavers, German Beer, German Ladies, German Watches.

Image

What I like about this watch (Part 2):

Swiss ETA2824-2: Industrial Standard Workhorse Movement, Accurate, serviceable with most watch makers. Another vote of confidence for me.

Superluminova Lume: The indicators are orange in colour, but when it glows it’s greenish-yellow. One watch, two colours for lume. Bargain.

What I like about this watch (Part 3):

The case size: For some reason, at 40mm, the Junkers W33 feel bigger and wider on the wrist. It’s like an in between a classic gentlemen size (36mm) and a modern gentlemen size (41/42mm). So, if you can’t decide between the 2 go for a 40mm!
However, for wearers that may still feel 40mm is a tat-bit small, punch in a leather strap with matching bund. That should do the trick.

The Day/Date function: Neatly located at the 6 O’Clock position. I know this piece is not a Rollie DD, but a Made in Germany time piece with Swiss Movement + D/D function at that price point? The Junker W33 is a clear winner.

What I like about this watch (Part 4):

Transparent Case Back: Just look at the rotor whirl. Quite therapeutic. Really.

The parent company: Pointtec: The same producer of Zeppelin Watches. Reputable watch company with a good quality time pieces. 3rd vote of confidence… and counting.

What I think this watch can improve:

Quality of Leather Strap: I have the same problem with my other Junkers Time Pieces: The back of the leather bands disintegrates and the breaks rather quickly. Perhaps we can blame it on Singapore’s humid weather, but it’s truly no excuse for a strap to go bust in less than 12 months. Even Strap Shine by Dicon can help it!

I changed my leather bands immediately for all my Junkers, only because they don’t last. Some of them are unworn and left in the box, and even they go bad like an overipe banana after a couple of months.

The crown of most Junkers are not signed as well, not a make or break factor, but it would sure be nice to have little attention to details.

Image

Conclusions: The Junkers W33 is robust, lightweight and reliable time piece. Junkers are for those who knows and appreciate; and perfect to War History fans like myself. Small but not that small, big but not in your face kinda big.

Put on a German Flag Nato strap and you are good to watch the world cup finals, put on a brown / black leather strap and you are good to impress your date or your prospective client.

Who says you can only enjoy aviation timepieces only by buying EYE-DOUBLE-U-SEE, or BELLE and RAWS?

Thanks and acknowledgement: I purchased my Junkers W33 with Bronze Age. While they do not have the full collection, but their remaining pieces are sold in very attractive prices. You can find them at Blk 531 Upper Cross Street, #02-66A, Hong Lim Complex, Singapore 050531

The photos are taken in Craftsmen Specialty Coffee. Thanks to Mr. Ashton Yong and his crew for allowing me to take photos of the Junkers in their lovely café.

The leather band on this watch is coated with Strap Shine by Dicon for that extra softness on the leather and Junkers has been quite a joy on the wrist.

Please write to me at hello@jaspe.com.sg if you need further information the Junkers or Strap Shine by Dicon. Here’s wishing a blessed day and see you next week for more.
