What is acceptable manufacture date to purchase date?

Post by KKFA » 12 Jun 2013 12:14

Hi all,

A noob question to all the gurus here.

We can tell the month and year of manufacture by looking at serial number of Seiko watches.

I know there is no real "shelf-life" for watchesbut is there a rule of thumb as to what constitutes a "new" purchase as for example the watch is made in say Feb 2012 and was bought in say July 2013? Or it does not matter at all?

Just one of those things that I was wondering about as I got a Seiko which was made in June last year but I got it just a couple weeks back.

Hoping for some enlightenment.

Thanks folks.

I'm not affected by the manufacturing date.

In fact, when I got to know that my Orient watch was a discontinued model (which meant that it was manufactured a few years back), I am even more happy.

It works just fine too.

as long as the watch is working at the time of purchase and warranty starts from the purchase date, i'm ok.

Thanks for the replies.
I too feel it should not matter but was just wondering whether there any other views.
Thanks again

I will ask for a few pieces to choose, and look at the serial numbers. Of course I will take the newest one.

Interesting food for thought but not exactly a cause of concern for me.

Good point to raise.
For me a new watch is a new watch.
Unless that particular mostly has issues w certain production batches, then I'll check.

Personally I will still check the watch for misalignment or any qc issues irregardless of manufacturing date.

And like a bro said. If its a discon model and a last pc then no choice

I guess for mechanical watches the date should not be a concern. But for quartz pieces this may come to play as the battery life would be rundown, especially for those where the batteries are more difficult than usual to replace or needs to be sent to Service Centers to do so.

I could not be so sure, but its possible the watch although new or rather BNIB, and with a shelf of X years will have some dying of oil. This will mean a shorter service interval if you are really concerned about service intervals and that kinda stuff. just my 2 cents
