[Review] Seiko SKA289P1 aka Big Boss
It's been a while since I bought any Seikos, not because I am stopping but it's just that the current models are not really singing to me at this point of time. Still on the hunt for discon models still but man, the prices are really crazy.
Tbh, I'm not a hoarder myself, I know it, I am a flipper, once the fever dies off, sooner or later I will let go to another good home.
Kinetics, never once in my radar but did owned a few 7L Premier, Arctura & Sportura before, really nice designs but just not sure about capacitor change when the time is up and also, the ticking of the secondhand (haha). I'm pretty anal about the secondhand hitting perfectly on the indices. So far, all those which I had, had perfect alignment.
When this model was available, it did not get my attention at all. I mean 'At All' but the left side crown does interest me but I never really bother to handle the watch from the showcase. I'm guessing this model discon around 07-08? Mine is a 2005 model.
First saw this watch from IMM many months back, just barely noticed it in the display case, sitting side by side with other older & discon quartz/kinetic auto relay models.
It's only recently when I was at IMM, I went inside the shop again and browsed around and this piece was still there. I realised I have not seen any white dial 'Big Boss' before and I spent 15mins loitering inside the shop and I do not currently own any white dial diver
Finally I asked the salesgirl to show me.
Checked the secondhand alignment, hmmm, just a micro millimeter off.
Checked the bezel alignment, ok, passed.
Checked the Q-set date, ok, works well.
Tried on the watch, surprisingly it sits well on my wrist and the weight of the watch amazed me. It was solid overall.
Next moment, I was at the cashier paying for it
Seiko SKA289 'Big Boss' kinetic
47mm inclusive of 9:00 crown, 22mm lugwidth.
What I liked about the watch was the many different interesting design 'elements' on the watch case; the shape of the bevel to the case shape.
The brushed bezel slopes downwards with a piece of polished minute marker ring sitting on top, a scratch magnet imo but bezel is easy to turn even though it slopes down. Lots of 'depth on the bezel down to the case where it 'meets'.
The crown side reminds me of a Seiko 'Pipin' model which I had before, the organic fluid curvature sloping down to the centre of the case, smooth to finger's touch. Crown is at 10:00 position, kinetic lifespan pusher is at 9:00.
Seiko 'Pipin'
Non-crown case profile is polished
What I also like, is the use of colour on the C-ring markers. Orange numerics against glossy white C-ring, legible and sporty...and the lume
more juicy lumesssss
Another interesting feature of this watch, is the bracelet design. It is unlike the typical jubilee or oyster or Monster type but more of a 'retro' type. It looks 'retro' to me, at least, haha. Interesting 'square' centre links, of both brushed & polished finish & SEL, I'm surprised. A solid piece of bracelet nearing 4mm thick.
& it's Pin & collar type, phew.
Random pics
Am I happy with the purchase?
I guess I am.
Doubt won't own a 'season' parking in my box but I guess it might stay in my box for at least a while.
Definitely a good grab & go watch for me.

I have enjoyed the read tremendously, CEO. You really love and appreciate all watches; your attitude towards our hobby really change my perspective as well. Thanks kindly!

I did noticed your Boss from your prev WRUW posts (before I chanced upon this white Boss) and tbh, it's your watch which inspired me to purchase this white Boss

It's a great piece CEO. I bought mine years ago at a watch shop at Compass Point. I walked in, saw it, like the looks and paid for it. Haha...lunarin79 wrote:hahaa, thks bro.TheChef wrote:Great review CEO. Mine says hallo...

yes, I agree it's a great piece.
Though kinetic but somehow, the design just grows on you.
