[Review] Avi-8 Hawker Hurricane AV-4016-04
Posted: 21 Nov 2015 00:09
Cannot remember when was the first time (early this year?) I stumbled upon this brand and to be honest, it was the Flyboy model which caught my attention.
I am short of a pilot watch in my collection
In RG case with black textured dial
Checked out the price at Bencoolen but just felt the price doesn't really justify for it (Miyota 8xxx) movement & couldn't find this RG variant on internet and hence dropped the idea of getting one.
Last weekend, I was at a mall & walked into Watch Hub, realised they are selling Avi-8 & checked for the RG Flyboy variant but unfortunately, they do not have this variant. Then I saw this Hawker Hurricane variant, in black dial, green dial & full white dial. White is unique but the green dial is playful as well.
Did some online research on the prices and found it to be very affordable, placed an order on 14th and received watch on 19th via Fedex.
I went with Green

Case
For the price I paid, I really cannot complain about it. Case finishing is ok. Case comprises of both brushed & polished finish, polished finish portion is on the edge of the lug. Just a very fine part of it which I think is a good detail as it breaks the balance between the vertical & horizontal brushed finishings on the watch case. No sharp edges on the case.
One minor issue is the back of the lug, the edges are sharp but when worn on wrist, you won't feel it. It's only when you are holding the watch in your hand then you are able to feel it.
Crown
A typical large diamond crown, in polished finish and the contrast of both brushed(case) & polished(crown) is quite pleasant. Signed crown with Avi-8 'Bullseye logo'. Bullseye logo protrudes out slightly on the flush end part of the crown, which I find this small detail pretty tasteful. Winding is smooth, no gritty feeling whatsoever.
i apologise for the 'unexpected' visitor, lol
Dial, Date & Hands
Interesting use of colour and texture. An outer smooth C-Ring with 'pebble grain' texture in the centre. Second sub-dial @ 9:00, date at 3:00. Second sub-dial logo is derived from the famous WWII Hawker Hurricane logo. The colours used, blends perfectly together with the deep green dial. Very eye-catching colour combination indeed.
Close up pic of the 'pebble grain' textured dial
Lume (sort of sucks btw, lol). Anyway, am not a lume-junkie so I can live with it.
Date window Porthole. The porthole is small, to be honest, it can be difficult to read the date sometimes. I'm not sure why it's made so small. It might be ok if the date is a single digit but when it comes to double digit dates, it can be challenging.
Hands are in gloss black finish. I doubt the hands can be modded. The cannon pinion is like 'integrated' together with the hands. It doesn't look like the hands can be removed.
Movement
Using a DG3809 movement, 21,600bph. Hack/handwind. Movement is undecorated. Maybe they should be using a solid caseback than a display caseback in this case. Rotor spins quite smoothly, even with the slightest movement. Timekeeping seems to be decent.
Overall, it's a decent watch at this pricepoint, Flyboy is still on my radar though
I definitely recommend this watch to those who are looking to add a pilot style watch into their collection, other than the typical Type A or Type B styling, this can be another nice alternative to a pilot theme watch
Pros:
Affordable price
Nice dial texture
Decent quality
Cons:
Date Porthole too small
Min hand seem to be a bit short
Undecorated movement
Lume weak
